About ONA

The Observatory Neigbourhood Afterschool (ONA) Project is the result of collaboration between The Idea Processor, the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and Theatre Arts Admin Collective (TAAC). It is a donation based community initiative that seeks to provide children between the ages of 6 and 16 with a safe place to go after school hours for academic support and educational enrichment. After a year of planning, the project opened its doors in February 2014, to provide weekly activities for children in the neighbourhood and has been growing ever since.

In 2016, ONA now offers four weekly activities for children:

  • Y-Arts with the YMCA on Tuesday from 4:00-5:00pm
  • Visual Arts on Wednesday from 3:30-5:00pm
  • Cooking Class on Thursday from 3:30-5:00pm
  • Lego-Robotics with ORT-SA Cape from 2:30-3:30pm

In addition to these weekly classes, there is a monthly mini-market which takes place on the last Saturday of every month. The funds raised by this market are used to cover programme related costs. The market also provides the children participating in the weekly cooking classes with an opportunity to sell their baked goods and earn pocket money!
